Document what the textile must do — strength, breathability, softness, abrasion resistance, wash durability, UV performance, or moisture management. Hemp performs differently across these criteria.

Hemp fabric softens significantly with washing. Communicate “softens with every wash” proactively in product copy, care labels, and customer communications. Confirmed hempcrete is non-structural — structural frame designed separately
Hempcrete cannot carry floor, roof, or lateral loads. The structural frame (timber or steel) must be fully designed and costed before hempcrete specification begins. This is the most common hempcrete design error — do not proceed without explicit structural engineer sign-off.

Hempcrete complies with UK Building Regulations via the performance route (not Approved Document prescriptive route). In the EU, the French Guide des Bons Usages is the most developed standard. Confirm the approval route before starting design to avoid late-stage delays.

Hempcrete requires a formulated specialist binder (e.g. Tradical HB, Batichanvre) — not standard Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL). Using NHL produces a significantly weaker, poorly performing hempcrete. Specify the binder by product name, not just “lime binder”.

Vapour-open membrane and breathable finishes specified throughout
Hemp insulation and hempcrete assemblies must use vapour-open membranes and breathable finishes (lime plaster, clay plaster, mineral paint). Standard gypsum plaster, impermeable paint, or vapour barriers will trap moisture and cause long-term failure. This applies to all hemp construction systems.

Hempcrete must never be used below the DPC or in contact with ground moisture. Detail the base of the wall with a concrete or masonry upstand to DPC level before hempcrete begins. This is the most commonly missed detailing requirement on hempcrete projects.

Hempcrete and hemp insulation carry a significant cost premium over conventional systems (material + specialist labour). Confirm the project brief includes this premium with a clear rationale — embodied carbon target, breathability requirement, or heritage specification. Confirmed the governing design criterion: stiffness, strength, or weight
Hemp fiber has competitive specific stiffness (stiffness per unit weight) vs E-glass but significantly lower absolute tensile strength. If your application is governed by maximum strength → hemp is likely not suitable. If governed by stiffness-to-weight → hemp may be competitive. Define this before evaluating hemp.

Matrix system selected: thermoset (epoxy/polyester) or thermoplastic (PP/PLA)
Hemp works with both but performs differently. Epoxy (including bio-epoxy) gives best adhesion for thermoset applications. PP is standard for automotive pressed mat. PLA and PHA for compostable end-of-life applications. Surface treatment (alkali, silane) is generally required for optimal fibre-matrix adhesion.

Moisture sensitivity addressed in design and processing specification
Hemp fiber is hydrophilic — moisture absorption can reduce mechanical performance and fibre-matrix adhesion in service. Surface treatment is essential for wet-service or high-humidity applications. Confirm that the intended service environment is appropriate and that moisture effects are accounted for in structural calculations.

Processing route confirmed: hand lay-up, RTM, vacuum infusion, or hot press
Different processing routes have different tooling costs, cycle times, and achievable fibre volume fractions. Hot press is standard for automotive hemp-PP panels. Hand lay-up or vacuum infusion for marine and sporting goods. Match the process to the volume and geometry requirements of your application.

Mechanical testing plan in place — do not skip for structural applications
Natural fiber composites show more variability than glass or carbon fiber composites. Test to ISO 527 (tensile), ISO 178 (flexural), and ISO 14130 (interlaminar shear) before production sign-off. For automotive OEM applications, specific OEM test standards apply — confirm with the relevant procurement team.

Growing licence obtained from relevant authority
Industrial hemp growing requires a licence in most jurisdictions — UK (Home Office), EU (national authority under CAP), USA (USDA or state programme), Canada (Health Canada). Apply early — processing times vary. Confirm approved variety list for your jurisdiction before purchasing seed.

Variety selected for intended output: fiber, grain, or dual-purpose
Fiber varieties (e.g. Futura 75, Finola for dual) are optimised for stalk yield and bast fiber quality. Grain varieties maximise seed yield. Dual-purpose varieties compromise both. You cannot easily switch between them mid-season — commit to the intended market pathway at the seed selection stage.
Before planting
Offtake contract or buyer confirmed before planting
Hemp straw, fiber, and hurd cannot be sold through conventional grain markets. A processor or buyer must be identified and an offtake arrangement in place before planting — without it, you may have no route to market. This is the most common risk new hemp growers underestimate.
High commercial risk
Retting and harvest equipment plan confirmed
Hemp harvest requires a mower/conditioner for cutting, a windrower or tedder for retting, and a baler. Some equipment is shared with other crops; specialist equipment (hemp-specific baler or combine header for seed) may need to be hired. Plan hire and timing 3–6 months in advance.

Rotation position selected with agronomic rationale
Hemp works best before a cereal crop in the rotation — its weed suppression and soil structure benefits carry forward. It is generally not recommended after oilseed rape (shared disease risk) or after itself more frequently than every 4–5 years. Confirm position in rotation before seed order.

Realistic yield and income expectations set — compared against alternative crops
Hemp typically delivers lower gross margin than OSR or wheat in the first year due to unfamiliarity and market development costs. Model at realistic yields (3–6 t/ha dry straw in UK conditions) and confirmed offtake prices before committing area. Do not plan on premium prices without a signed contract.

Hemp fiber packaging is biodegradable — but the specific conditions matter. Moulded hemp fiber typically requires industrial composting to break down within commercially relevant timescales. Hemp-PLA may require industrial composting, not home compost. Verify the actual end-of-life conditions available to your end users before making biodegradability claims.

Hemp moulded fiber packaging supply chains are less developed than wood pulp alternatives. Uncoated hemp moulded fiber has limited moisture resistance. EPR legislation in the EU and UK affects packaging material choices — hemp moulded fiber and bio-based plastics have different compliance routes than conventional plastic. Confirm the EPR classification and associated fees for your specific product in your key markets before locking in a material specification.

Hemp moulded packaging typically costs 2–4× equivalent EPS foam packaging. Model this premium against your current packaging cost base and the tangible value it delivers (brand positioning, regulatory compliance, consumer perception). This is a brand investment decision, not a cost-neutral material switch.

Supply chain origin documented — country of growing, processing, and manufacture
Hemp supply chains are often multi-country — grown in France, processed in Asia, manufactured elsewhere. Document each stage for sustainability reporting, traceability claims, and buyer audits. “European hemp” claims require the fiber to be grown, retted, and processed in Europe — processing in Asia does not qualify.

Hemp supply chains are thinner and less resilient than cotton, glass fiber, or mineral wool. For commercial projects with hard deadlines or penalties for late delivery, always identify a conventional material supplier as a contingency. Document the cost premium vs conventional alternatives in a formal approval. This prevents mid-project pushback when procurement or finance teams see line items without context. For construction projects subject to whole-life carbon reporting or public procurement sustainability requirements, an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is increasingly required. Request EPDs from your hemp product supplier — some products already have them; others do not. Without one, you cannot make verified embodied carbon claims.
